KEEPING IT IN

What are Piles?

Piles/hemorrhoids are enlarged, painful veins located in the lower part of the rectum and the anus. The veins become swollen due to increased pressure within them, usually from constipation or profuse diarrhea, and during pregnancy because of the pressure of the enlarged uterus.

Internal hemorrhoids :

Internal hemorrhoids are located in the inside lining of the rectum and cannot be felt. They are usually painless and make their presence known because blood is seen with a bowel movement. Internal hemorrhoids can prolapse or protrude through the anus.

External Hemorrhoids:

External hemorrhoids are located underneath the skin that surrounds the anus. They can be felt when they swell and may cause itching, pain, or bleeding with a bowel movement. A thrombosed external hemorrhoid occurs when blood within the vein clots, and may cause significant pain.

Common Causes of Piles

Hemorrhoid Causes

Hemorrhoids are associated with constipation and straining at bowel movements. Pregnancy is also associated with hemorrhoids. These conditions lead to increased pressure within the hemorrhoidal veins that causes them to swell. Other conditions, for example chronic liver disease, may also cause increased venous pressure and may be associated with hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are very common and are estimated to occur in up to one-half of the population by age 50.

Dietary Tips:

*Banana is known to be a good laxative; but boiled bananas consumed twice a day is one of the effective home remedies for piles. Make sure to have ripe bananas boiled.

*Glass of butter milk made out of sour curd with a dash of lime and rock salt is also effective to cure the symptoms of piles.
Homemade curd with a dash of mustard powder is also effective in curing the conditions of piles

*A concoction made out of ginger, honey, sweet lime and mint is also effective in keeping the system cool and free from toxins.

*Juice of onion added to water with dashes of sugar also proves to be a healthy option.

*Powdered seeds of mango serve as another remedial option if taken with honey.

*Application of baking soda on the swollen veins also serves to reduce inflammation.

*Juice extracted from carrot and beet root may be applied on a long piece of gauze to be applied on the swollen veins.

*Application of warm olive oil is said to be equally effective.

*Consumption of juice extracted out of aloe also serves to reduce the painful swelling of piles.

*A decoction made out of neem leaves enriched with its anti septic content; in addition to that of honey and half a cup of butter milk is also effective.

*Milk enriched with drops of latex of banyan is also beneficial if consumed regularly.

*Juice extracted from flowers of tamarind also serves to heal piles if consumed internally.

*For instantaneous relief from pain, soaking in luke warm water may prove to be comfortable.

Dietary Changes:

Increased fluid intake and dietary fiber (roughage) will decrease the potential for constipation and lessen the pressure on the rectum and anus during a bowel movement, minimizing further swelling, discomfort, and bleeding. Dietary fiber supplements may also help bulk up the stools

Stool Softeners:

Stool softeners may help, but once hemorrhoids are present, liquid stools may cause inflammation and infection of the anus. A health care professional or pharmacist are good resources to discuss their use.

Activity Suggestions:

Individuals with hemorrhoids should not sit for long periods of time and may benefit from sitting on an air or rubber donut available at most local pharmacies. Exercise is helpful in relieving constipation and in decreasing pressure on the hemorrhoidal veins. Individuals should be encouraged to have a bowel movement as soon as possible after the urge arises. Once that urge passes, stools can become constipated and straining with a bowel movement may occur.

Don't use dry toilet paper:

To help keep the anal area clean after a bowel movement, use moist towelettes or wet toilet paper that doesn't contain perfume or alcohol.

Apply cold compress:

Apply ice packs or cold compresses on your anus to relieve swelling.

With these treatments, hemorrhoid symptoms often go away within a week. See your doctor if you don't get relief in a week, or sooner if you have severe pain or bleeding.
